Shrink, stockouts, uneven staff expertise, and manual processes quietly drain margin from the fresh aisle. Together with retailers, we turn that challenge into a new standard for profitable, sustainable retail, where good food feeds people instead of ending up in the trash.
Fourteen years ago, we set out to solve a problem that felt too big to ignore. Retailers were losing margin to unnecessary waste. Products ended up in the trash. Families and the environment paid the price. And so we built Smartdetection and Smartdecision with a clear belief that our technology could help the industry do better.
From the start, we believed shrink wasn’t inevitable: it was a business problem hiding as a sustainability one. Our founders saw margin where others saw loss, and that conviction now drives every member of our team. Together, we keep food in circulation, protect retailers’ margin, and turn smarter systems into real, daily impact.

Today, Smartway operates across four continents with team members in twelve countries, always close to the retailers we support. Years of field work showed that cutting waste by up to 40 percent comes from practical tools and real partnership. We grow by proving results, one store at a time.
We built Smartdetection to stop waste at the end of product life. Smartorder now covers the full path of fresh food. Retailers get accurate orders, better visibility and support where it matters. One partner, one approach and a clear goal, protect food and protect margin.

Experts driving food waste reduction through technology

Paul-Adrien Menez co-founded Smartway in 2012 with a bold vision that protecting retailers' margin on fresh could be done at scale AND transform an entire industry along the way. Today, Smartway operates across four continents, partnering with the world's largest retailers to protect margin and rescue hundreds of millions of products from waste each year. Recognized as one of MIT Technology Review's Innovators Under 35 Europe in 2019, Paul-Adrien has built the technology behind that shift, with AI doing the work quietly in the background, proving that protecting margin and protecting the planet can be the same fight.

Christophe Menez co-founded Smartway in 2012, driven by a powerful conviction: technology should serve the people running the business, not the other way around. Leading the company's commercial and revenue teams, Christophe has grown Smartway from a French startup into a global business, partnering with retail giants like Auchan, Carrefour, and E.Leclerc in Europe and, more recently, with Vallarta Supermarkets on Smartway's first US rollout in California. A sought-after voice at international conferences, he bridges hands-on retail experience with real-world results, proving that protecting margin and reducing waste can be the same decision.
Our journey began with a simple yet powerful mission: turn retail losses into profit, one store at a time.
We break down intricate food supply problems into simple, actionable solutions. Our approach transforms data into strategic insights that drive meaningful change.

We design from real conditions, not theory, by working directly in stores. This hands-on approach creates systems that fit daily tasks and perform reliably across every site.

We know no two retailers are the same. Our adaptable technology shifts with priorities, whether it’s stock availability, turnover, or EBIT, so teams always focus on what matters most.

We design tools that remove guesswork from daily decisions. Whether it's ordering the right quantity, managing stock, or handling products at end-of-life, with accurate guidance built in, teams work faster and keep their attention where it belongs, on customers.
